In recent times the petroleum industry has seen an increase in small, medium and even large contractors outsourcing the development of their safety programs to “safety consultants”. The safety consultants develop safety manuals and communicate the company’s safety information to hiring companies through various HSE data entry systems. There are three reasons for this.

I had an interesting meeting with the HSE Manager of an oil and gas producer recently. We discussed the number of incidents this particular company has had over the past year. Based on their internal analysis they found that 98% of incidents were from “approved contractors” meaning that the companies involved met the standards in the Producer’s pre-qualification process.
